Sud Sound System is a reggae band founded in 1991 and based in Salento, in the south east of Italy, “the heel of the boot”. Their musical debut took place in June 1991 with.the vinyl album “Fuecu/T’ha Sciuta Bona” that immediately had a significant impact on Italian music, due to the message contained in the songs, the freshness of the style, and the originality of using specific Salento dialect in reggae music.
Sud Sound System: Terron Fabio, Nandu Popu and Don Rico (three of the five current members) are proud to announce that they will be for the first time in Jamaica with their 25th anniversary tour. In their career Sud Sound System have sang and performed with a lot of Jamaican singers such as Anthony B, Luciano, Richie Stephens, T.O.K, Capleton, Anthony Johnson, Shaggy and so on and a lot of new productions are upcoming.
I Sud Sound System sono i pionieri del raggamuffin e del dancehall style, in Salento e in Italia. Si esibiscono per la prima volta fuori dal Salento il 21 gennaio 1989 nel centro sociale Leoncavallo di Milano benché il loro esordio discografico sia datato 1991, con il 12 pollici Fuecu/T’a sciuta bona. Da subito l’impatto della band sulla scena musicale italiana è notevole. Il loro sound reggae mixato a testi impegnati cantati in dialetto salentino li conduce per live, apparizioni televisive e radiofoniche, fino al Festival delle Nuove Tendenze d’Autore di Recanati. Sono protagonisti di un documentario firmato Renato De Maria e di un video di Gianluca Sgalambro, trasmessi dalle principali tv nazionali. L’esperienza dei SSS diventa anche oggetto di analisi e dibattiti in alcune università italiane con i sociologi Georges Lapassade e Piero Fumarola.
Tra il ’93 e il ’94 i SSS solcano i primi palchi europei insieme ad artisti internazionali come Macka B e Mad Professor, Little Owie, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Asher D, Chubby Rankin, Daddy Freddy, Thriller Jenna, Sweete Irie, Echo Minott, Shabba Ranks, the Wailers, Anthony B e Sizzla. Nello stesso anno avviano la produzione del Salento Showcase, in cui si affiancano alle nuove voci della scena reggae salentina, radicalizzando un vero e proprio movimento. Il progetto ritornerà nel 2000, 2005 e nel 2007, con la nascita del Salento ShowCase Group.
